What Happens After My 10 Year Plan?

I’ve always created 3 year plans, 5 year plans and 10 year plans. I’ve set goals for myself each year, and I’ve been fortunate enough to meet those goals each year. I’m a hard worker, but I’m also privileged. Positive affirmation is something I’ve craved all my life. (Thanks Mom and Dad) But, luckily, I’ve been at places that fulfill this sense of need and belonging. I’ve been rewarded for my hard work, and I’m grateful for that. But after a quality chat with my cousin tonight, I started to wonder – what happens after all this? What happens after my 10 year plan?

In an age where more and more women are career driven, finding a balance is difficult between life, love, work and family (not in that order). For me, career has always been no 1. One day, I’d love to open up my own company and have the dream team that I once was a part of. Career to me is more than an office. It’s that relationship I have with myself and with my passion. It’s a relationship that’s challenging, but it makes me want to be better. I remember talking to a colleague and friend one evening and saying that your first real job is like your first real love. It excites you, gives you hope, and sometimes (most times), it breaks your heart. But what we do after, is where our journey begins.

Then, what? Where do we go? In between the promotions, kids, and retirement – what are we supposed to do? It’s my fault I never went beyond 40. I didn’t think my life would end, I just never paid attention to the number. So, I guess there’s no better time than the present. I decided to do a Google search for “after 40.” It’s educational, you should try it. You’ll find: Fashion, Beauty and Style Advice for Women over 40, Fitness Over 40, Change Your Career after 40, Fit and Fabulous after 40. Okay,  you get the point. For kicks, do a search for after 30. Only random articles and links. Guess I’m not the only one looking for an answer.

So tell me, how have you set goals for your 40, 50, 60, 70+? Any tips you’d like to share?

  1. I regret to say this is the very first time I’ve looked at your blog. The good news? It’s a blog and I can go back and read all of your wonderful thoughts on marketing, PR, SM and life.

I too like setting goals each year. However, I’ve stuck to one year, three year, and five year plans. I think 10 always seemed very distant…and still does. Therefore, my plan for my 40’s is to simply make it there. I’ll get back to you then.

    • Thanks for checking it out! I need to post more, so lmk if you have any topics you want me to stop talking about at work, but to start talking about here.

Re: 10 year plans – it’s amazing how time flies and before you know it – we’re 30. The what we are supposed to do and be becomes reality. Boo.
